SOUTH BEND — Dallas has become the latest city to try to lure the College Football Hall of Fame from South Bend, and National Football Foundation officials say it’s not going anywhere.

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert held a press conference Monday to announce that the city wants the Hall of Fame in its downtown. Leppert was joined by T. Boone Pickens, Roger Staubach and Deion Sanders. The city has created a task force to launch an official bid for the museum.

NFF president Steve Hatchell said the foundation hasn’t been looking around for a new museum site. Hatchell said Dallas contacted the foundation and hasn’t submitted a proposal. Either way, he said, the NFF is committed to South Bend.

"We’ve very publicly said we’re happy in South Bend and appreciate the support we’ve had," Hatchell said.

Hatchell said communities have inquired about the Hall of Fame over the years, and that some do it publicly like Dallas and others quietly contact them. He said the NFF doesn’t have any official proposals from any cities at this time.

The bid by Dallas comes less than a month before voters there decide on Proposition 1, a ballot initiative that will determine whether the city can own a proposed hotel next to its convention center.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the city has been pushing for the new hotel. One pro-hotel group is headed up by Leppert, and another group received contributions from Pickens, according to the newspaper. The Morning News also reports that millions of dollars have been spent by pro-hotel and anti-hotel groups.
