VALPAIRAISO, Ind. (AP) — A fire that caused about $25,000 in damage to a building at Valparaiso University is being investigated as suspicious.

University spokesman Reggie Syrcle says that's because an inspection of the university's Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center has so far yielded no clues what sparked the blaze Tuesday night. The one-story building was vacant.

The lack of a cause for the fire has some in the northern Indiana community concerned because the city has seen a rash of racially motivated crimes in recent weeks, including racial slurs and vandalism at local businesses, the high school and at residences.

Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas said his office is trying to determine if there is a pattern.
