Joshua Smith was found safe early Thursday morning after Sturgis Police issued a missing child alert for the 11-year-old.

Prior to being found, Joshua was last seen Wednesday at the corner of U.S. 12 (Chicago Road) and Nottawa Street in Sturgis. He was found at a friend's house at 3 a.m. Thursday.

According to a news release from Sturgis Police Sgt. Luis Rosado, Joshua did not go to school Wednesday for fear he’d be involved in a fight.

Sturgis Police relayed that Joshua's parents were appreciative of police and media response that quickly helped locate the youth.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department worked with Sturgis Police in a joint search for the youth. Along with the police search, the “A Child Is Missing” organization aided the effort through a telephone network.
