UPDATE: Lost youth OK after massive search

By WSBT 24/7 News

BERRIEN SPRINGS — A 13-year-old Berrien Springs area boy who ran into a wooded area while looking for his dog was lost for seven hours Wednesday night before he was found by a passing motorist.

Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township police said the motorist spotted him about six miles from the area where he had become lost. He was unharmed, police said.

A police report stated the boy’s grandfather told them the teenager had entered the woods near East Snow and Hills roads about 6:30 p.m. to look for his newly acquired dog, Buster, who had gotten loose from the yard and run off. The grandfather reportedly said the dog was found near the house a short time later but the youth never returned.

Police said the grandfather searched for the boy in his car and called police after failing to find him. A massive search ensued, with the Baroda Fire Department using thermal imaging equipment to search the woods and Michigan State Police summoning a helicopter.

A police tracking dog also was utilized and the FBI was contacted prior to the motorist’s discovery of the youth about 1:30 a.m. near Linco and Hollywood roads. Police said the boy was returned to his "very worried, yet now relieved family.’
