Shantay Britman reacts after learning she holds a winning ticket in the Hoosier Lottery. (WSBT photo) ELKHART — An Elkhart mother of three is in shock after her lottery ticket matched all six numbers for Wednesday's Hoosier Lottery drawing. The ticket is worth more than $6 million. She bought it at the 7-Eleven on County Road 20 in Elkhart. The woman hasn't officially been named the winner. That's because she has to physically take the ticket down to Hoosier Lotto headquarters in Indianapolis to have it validated. The woman stopped at the store around 6 p.m. Thursday to get gas before heading to school at IU South Bend. For the mother of three, winning the lottery will certainly make life a bit easier. Shantay Britman's life has just changed. "I can pay my bills. Oh, my God," said Britman. Britman buys lottery tickets regularly at the store. "I never play $5. I always win a free ticket. And last night I came and I was like, well, just give me five," said Britman. The money couldn't have come at a better time. "I got laid off in July. We live in my mom's house. She moved into an apartment complex because we have three kids and she let us stay in her house," said Britman. It's a story heard all across Elkhart County. The area's unemployment rate climbed to 18 percent, the highest in the state. Store employees say it's about time for some good news. "And I think knowing something like this happened here it's going to give people that little bit of hope that they need to move on. And it just makes it more exciting," said 7-Eleven employee Charlene Miller. After Britman was asked what she plans on buying first she said, "Go on vacation. I'm taking my kids to Disney World. I am taking them to Disney World, I promise." The store will get $65,000 for selling the winning ticket. Britman says she wasn't going to check the numbers because she never thought she would win. After a store employee told her the winning ticket was sold there, she went out to her car and got the ticket. A few minutes later she ran out of the store screaming. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
