NOTRE DAME - Charlie Weis said that establishing the running game will be essential to his team's success in 2009. That was evident on Saturday, as the offense rushed for 247 total yards in a 68-33 win over the defense.

Notre Dame committed to the run, carrying the ball 59 of the 88 total plays from scrimmage. Junior Armando Allen gained 70 yards on 12 carries, including a 34 yarder that set up a touchdown. Allen was named Offensive MVP.

Fellow junior RB Robert Hughes gained 93 yards on 21 carries, including two touchdown runs.

Sophomore Jonas Gray also gained 89 yards on 20 carries, including a touchdown.

The defense was led by MVP Robert Blanton, who delivered the game's most spectacular play. Blanton intercepted a pass by Jimmy Clausen in the 1st half and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown, which was followed by an impromptu celebratory game of duck-duck-goose by the defensive starters.

"I hope they got that on tape", head coach Charlie Weis chuckled. "So I can see how stupid they looked."
