Fire in Downtown Plymouth destroys business

PLYMOUTH---A fire in downtown Plymouth destroyed one business.
The fire started just after 3:30pm Sunday afternoon inside a comic store in the 200 block of North Michigan Street.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the back of the business. Every unit with the Plymouth Fire Department was brought it to fight it, along with units from Bremen and Argos.

Several apartments above the store had to be evacuated along with nearby businesses.

"We could smell the smoke, and I opened up the bathroom door, smoke came out of the bathroom”, said resident Dan Scoggin. “I thought maybe it was an electrical fire in the bathroom. And we went to go out the hallway, opened up the hallway door and the whole hallway was full of smoke. So we got all the kids together and grabbed everybody and got out the door, and just smoke everywhere."

The Red Cross is helping Dan and his family find a place to stay.

Investigators say the fire was started by an electrical cord that shorted out.
