MISHAWAKA — It’s over.

Steelworkers Local 12273 ratified a new four-year labor agreement Sunday with Bayer.

"We look forward to continuing our long track record of good relations and mutual respect with our employees," said Bayer’s director of global communications, Susan Yarin, who would not release details of the contract.

About 160 people from Steelworkers Local 12273 attended the vote Sunday, said Jo Robinson, international staff representative for United Steel Workers. The vote was not unanimous, but it did pass, she said.

"It was a hard negotiation. It really was," she said. "It was difficult and frustrating. ... The members sacrificed here, and so hopefully the company will appreciate that."

Negotiations between Bayer and the union had been ongoing after their contract expired March 22. Bayer employs about 500 people at its Mishawaka site, 180 of whom are union.
