Local women vow to Take Back The Nightby Cindy Ward (ward@wsbt.com)
People walked in South Bend Thursday, April 23, to demand an end to crimes like domestic violence, sexual assault and rape. (WSBT photo) SOUTH BEND — On the day the St. Joseph County prosecutor files murder charges against a man accused of killing his girlfriend, the community took to the streets to say enough is enough. Police arrested Julius Anderson Thursday. He's charged with murder and arson in the death of girlfriend Dawn Brooks. Her body was found in her burning home Tuesday. That crime and crimes like it are why women said it was time to take back the night on Thursday. A memorial is all that's left at Dawn Brooks' home — a woman who feared for her life because of her boyfriend. Police say they'd had a fight the night before she died. "The reason she stuck with him was because he said he was going to kill her if she decided to leave him. So she had plans on leaving on May 1 to get away from him. She just didn't make it," said Brooks' friend, Mikelle Jaquish. It's a story played out all too often. One that pushes Jenifer Hill to try to do even more. "This is a continuing problem. It doesn't end and we need to keep fighting it," Hill said. That's why Madison Center's sex offense services sponsors this march every year against domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. "We are saying this is not going to be fine in our community. We will not accept this any longer," said Annie Envall, assistant director of Sexual Offense Services at Madison Center. For nine years, this group has taken to the streets to take back the night, a public event to make sure everyone can see and hear them. "To teach our young people, as we call attention to this, that there are ways to deal with problems in relationships," said Hill. They say they do this so the victims will not be forgotten, victims like Dawn Brooks, who paid with her life. Police say Brooks was beaten and stabbed. They believe Anderson then set the South Kendall Street home on fire. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
