Two rescued from Elkhart River after horse spooks, pulls buggy in

By WSBT 24/7 News

A couple was rescued from the Elkhart River in Noble County Tuesday night, after their horse spooked and it pulled their buggy into the river at 7 p.m.

Indiana Conservation Officer Justin Blake reported Maynard Hochstetler, 35, was operating the horse and buggy with a passenger, his wife, Luelon Hochstetler, 37.

The couple was eastbound on Union Street near the Rochester Road intersection, when Maynard Hochstetler applied the brakes and the horse spooked.

The horse, buggy and occupants tumbled into the Elkhart River. A passer-by reported the incident. The Hochstetlers climbed on top of their buggy, Blake said, while the horse and buggy continued to float down stream.

Personnel from the Ligonier Fire and Sparta Township fire departments rescued the couple. They were treated at the scene by Noble County EMS.

The horse drowned with the buggy still attached to it, according to Indiana Conservation Officer Rodney Clear. Officers will attempt to search and recover the horse and buggy on Wednesday.
