Flu outbreak forcing Notre Dame students' early return from Mexico

SOUTH BEND — Because of the spreading flu epidemic, eight University of Notre Dame students studying in Mexico this semester will return to the United States by the end of this week.

The Notre Dame students were attending Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, Mexico, and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (the Tec) in Monterrey, Mexico, the university announced Wednesday.

Because of the swine flu epidemic, the Mexican government canceled classes in all schools and universities until May 6, which was to be the last day of classes, so the cancellation effectively ended the semester.

Other Michiana area colleges also are taking precautions related to the spread of the flu.
