SOUTH BEND –The wife of South Bend’s city attorney was killed Thursday morning when she was struck by a school bus.

Police say a woman later identified as Kathy Curtis, wife of city attorney Chuck Leone, most likely was walking northbound on Riverside Drive, headed toward the start of the Riverwalk, when she was struck by the bus as she crossed Angela Street.

"Our sympathies and support go out to their family and friends in this time of grief," Mikki Dobski, spokeswoman for Mayor Stephen Luecke, said in a statement that identified Curtis as the pedestrian.

Police say the Angela Street bridge will be closed at least until noon, as traffic accident investigators still are at the scene.

The accident happened about 7:51 a.m. when South Bend School Corp. Bus 199 was turning left from Riverside on to Angela, on its way to Tarkington School, police said.

Capt. Phil Trent, South Bend police spokesman, said children were on the bus at the time of the accident but there were no injuries reported. The bus driver was taken by ambulance to the hospital for drug testing, a routine procedure in fatal traffic accidents.
