Police are investigating a girl’s claim that a man drove by and exposed and fondled himself while she and two other girls were walking to Riley High School on Thursday morning.

At 6:41 a.m., a 16-year-old girl said the man performed the act near Main and Calvert streets, while she was walking with two juvenile girls, ages unavailable, police said.

The girl took down the man’s license plate number, direction of travel and a description of his vehicle, a green 1994 Dodge Caravan, and called it in to police on her cell phone.

Dispatchers broadcasting the call to police officers described a “naked man” driving a truck, according to police scanner traffic. But it was unclear from police reports whether he was fully naked or just parts of his body were, said South Bend police Capt. Phil Trent.

An off-duty police officer who had been driving home after his midnight shift heard the call and found the suspect’s vehicle driving on Fellows Street near Dubail Avenue. He was apprehended. Police then brought the girl by, and she positively identified him and his vehicle, Trent said.

The man, age 24, of South Bend, was cited for driving with a suspended license, and his minivan was impounded. He was not arrested on the alleged indecent exposure, but the case was referred to the county’s Family Violence/Special Victims Unit, Trent said.
