Late Sunday evening, 6-year-old Shianna Aston remains in critical condition at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, according to a nursing supervisor.

The Mishawaka girl was struck by a car Thursday night as she and her 4-year-old sister, Shayla, were crossing 11th Street at Dodge Avenue. Shayla died Friday at the hospital.

A neighbor of the family told the Tribune in a story published Saturday, that Shianna had undergone two brain surgeries and had pins inserted in both legs to repair broken bones.

The driver, Leroy Hoover, 56, of the 1300 block of East 12th Street in Mishawaka, was questioned and released Thursday night after the accident, but the St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team is continuing its investigation.

Evidence has been submitted for toxicology tests. Those results are expected in about three to four weeks, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
