A Van Buren County man has been arrested and police continue their search for another following an investigation into counterfeit money — used to buy goods at garage sales, authorities said.

Beginning at noon Saturday, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department said, Paw Paw authorities and county officers began taking calls from people having garage sales where the man was trying to use the bills to buy items.

At one home, a sale customer was able to catch a license plate number after suspicions were raised. That information led police to Kalamazoo, where a bogus $50 bill had just been used at a garage sale on P Avenue, authorities said in a press release.

A Van Buren County K-9 unit spotted the suspect vehicle, a 1998 Dodge pickup, as it left a subdivision where that and other sales were being held. Sheriff’s Dep. Tony Evans stopped the truck after seeing the cargo area filled with goods bearing price stickers, police said.

The 42-year-old Bangor man, described by police as uncooperative, was found with dozens of garage sale items and about $300 in cash. He was arrested and taken to the Van Buren County Jail.

A search of the man’s home, in the 53000 block of Michigan 47, yielded more counterfeit currency, authorities said.

Paw Paw authorities assisted in questioning the man, who has also been arrested by Bangor Police for a different counterfeit money investigation. The United States Secret Service also is assisting with the case.

The man, as well as a second suspect — a 35-year-old man, also from Bangor — have not been identified.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Van Buren County Sheriff at (269) 657-3101.
