SOUTH BEND — Police say a 33-year-old man was shot three times early Wednesday morning as he attempted to enter his apartment.

Police say the man and his girlfriend were entering the apartment in the 1000 block on Lincoln Way West when they were approached by man who was walking north along Sherman Avenue.

The victim told police the shooter approached him, called him a name and then began firing a handgun – shooting at least five times.

The victim’s head was grazed by one of the bullets and he also was hit twice in the chest. He was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition. Police said the man was spared more serious injuries because the shooter used a small-caliber handgun.
