Suspects in custody after chase from Elkhart to Clay Township

By SBT 24/7 News

A police chase that began in Elkhart ended with the arrest of two people after the suspect vehicle crashed into a field near the Indiana-Michigan state line.

No one was injured, St. Joseph County emergency dispatch said, and the 25-minute chase finally came to an end — but not before four different police agencies came to assist Elkhart officers with the pursuit.

The chase began in Elkhart when a driver failed to stop for an officer just after 1:30 a.m, county authorities said. Authorities tell SBT24/7 News the driver was suspected of operating while intoxicated.

But by the time the driver headed west on Old U.S. 20, officers with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department were in pursuit, too.

About 1:50 a.m., police set up stop sticks to disable the vehicle's tires on McKinley Avenue near the Wal-Mart store on the county line. But the driver kept going past Ash Road — and that's when St. Joseph County units, including K-9 officers, joined the chase.

With speeds estimated at times at 60 mph or more, still the driver kept going. Past Bittersweet, past Capital — and eventually, drawing Mishawaka police cars into the pursuit, too.

The suspect driver headed north from McKinley to Adams Road and then headed west. With the vehicles so close to their jurisdiction, that's when Michigan State Police were notified by St. Joseph County to come assist, too.

But Adams Road dead-ends into Ironwood Road, and the driver of the suspect vehicle didn't make the turn. The vehicle, reportedly having limped for miles with punctured tires, ended up in a field, authorities said.

Two people were taken into custody once the driver stopped. Neither of them was injured, and no one else was involved in the chase and subsequent crash.

Authorities continued their investigation early Sunday and did not release names or information about possible charges.
