SOUTH BEND — A rescue boat was deployed Saturday morning for a suspect who led police on an extensive chase on the Indiana Toll Road.

Police said the man was speeding, but refused to pull over. The pursuit started around 1:30 a.m.

The suspect was westbound but turned around at one point to head eastbound, say police.

They deployed stop sticks near exit 72 (US 31), but the suspect hit them and kept driving with three flat tires. He didn’t stop until he was close to the South Bend-Notre Dame exit.

Police say he abandoned his car and went into the St. Joseph River from the Toll Road bridge. A Police K-9 unit then tracked and found the suspect along the river’s east bank, just north of the Cleveland Road Bridge, which is parallel to the Toll Road.

The suspect complained of difficulty breathing and walking, say police, so a rescue boat was sent to retrieve him and his two arresting officers.
