Teens go hungry for a good cause

Teens in St. Joseph, Michigan stage a 30-hour famine to raise money for world hunger.

By WSBT News1

St. Joseph — Every day in this world, 26-thousand children die because they didn't get enough to eat. But a St. Joseph, Michigan youth group is trying to do something to help put a stop to starvation by going hungry themselves.

They lived in boxes, braving the elements and their own hunger. It's called the 30-hour famine, a real-life lesson in what it means to be hungry and homeless. "It really teaches you to be thankful," said Autumn Gargano.

It's also teaching them that putting a stop to worldwide hunger isn't impossible. So they're also collecting support, and hope to raise $20,000. "That's food and healthcare and education for one full day and hat's a whole lot of kids," Ben Herbstreit says.

"Hunger is a curable disease if everybody pitches in and helps," Elisha Schoeplein told us. "I believe that one day hunger will no longer be a problem in the world as long as people step up and do stuff like this."

The Road to Life Church in St. Joseph, Michigan will continue to collect donations through Saturday, June 6th. Checks can be made out to World Vision and dropped off at the church. As of Saturday night, they've collected about $14,900 of their $20,000 goal.
