ELKHART - While investigating a report of a domestic disturbance Tuesday morning, police say they stumbled upon a methamphetamine lab at a home in the 1900 block of Minnie Street.

Authorities say they responded to the home for a domestic abuse report with possible shots fired at 2:41 a.m.

A 32-year-old man who lives at the home was arrested on three outstanding warrants. Police later learned the alleged victim, who is the suspect’s girlfriend, had been taken to a local hospital for bruising and scratches before officers arrived. No gunshot wounds were noted.

After Elkhart officers said they smelled a strong chemical odor, the Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Suppression Team was notified. Once inside, officers seized meth and numerous precursors used to manufacture the drug, along with two active meth reaction vessels, police said.

The suspect, Robert Roland, who has three outstanding warrants out of Elkhart, Elkhart County and Cass County, was accused of battery, criminal confinement and manufacturing meth over three grams, police said. He has not been charged for the most recent accusations.

Elkhart Sgt. James Ballard said the criminal confinement accusation stems from keeping the woman at the house through “physical and verbal” means.

Roland pleaded guilty in April 2008 to domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and was placed on reporting probation for one year, according to court records.

Ballard said police are pursuing leads on the possibility of additional suspects being involved with the meth lab.

Anyone with information is asked to call Ballard at (574) 295-7070. The tip line is (574) 389-4777.
