SOUTH BEND — The case of a St. Joseph County Police officer accused of insurance fraud has been delayed while the case is moved to another judge.

Patrolman Gary Newcomb, 35, is charged with conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, stemming from a plan authorities say he made with two others in 2003 to falsify the details of a car crash.

Newcomb had been assigned to St. Joseph Superior Court Jane Woodard Miller, but because two co-defendants are assigned to a different judge, Newcomb’s case was moved to the courtroom of Judge Roland W. Chamblee Jr.

The move follows a new local rule that requires felony cases in which co-defendants have been charged to be assigned to the same judge or magistrate.

Newcomb’s next hearing is 8 a.m. June 11.
