SOUTH BEND — For the last several months, you have been helping your Neighbors In Need — first with food donations, and now with clothing donations.

Kenneth Newman, a single dad who's out of work, says his family is filling their empty stomachs on prayers and groceries from the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

“It helps me get through the week until I’m able to get some more food,” he told WSBT News.

St. Vincent de Paul isn't just a thrift store with great bargains; they also have a food pantry.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society services about 400 families monthly. They say many of the families are new families that have never had to receive assistance before.

"It'll be about a week’s worth of food for the folks,” said John Krish.

Krish is one of the many volunteers who packs and delivers meals to those in need.

"I've been doing this for about 2 and a half or 3 years, and a lot of times it’s more rewarding, I think, for the conference members — the folks making the deliveries — than it is for the members we're taking it to,” he said.

Krish says there's a lot of pride involved when someone needs a helping hand.

“It’s another one of God’s children, so we’re helping each other out,” he said. “I’m sure someday if Kenneth gets back on his feet he's gonna be doing the same thing for somebody else.”

Kenneth Newman says he's not giving up.

"I’m hoping to find a job in the near future when things start to get better,” Newman said.

And until then, the St. Vincent de Paul Society is not giving up on Newman.

“I mean they've never turned me down yet,” he said, “so every time I need them they'll be right there for me.”

If you would like to donate clothing or other goods to either the Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul, you can do that at any of their locations. Click here for more information.
