UPDATE … South Bend man killed in Toll Road crash near Michigan City

By WSBT 24/7 News

A South Bend man was killed and a Cassopolis man injured early Saturday when their motorcycles crashed in an accident involving a deer at the Indiana Toll Road 41.8 mile marker — 2 miles east of the Michigan City exit.

The westbound lanes of the Toll Road re-opened to traffic at 11 a.m. Saturday, after wreckage and the deer were removed from the 5:30 a.m. CST accident.

Indiana State Police-Toll Road District said two men — Paul R. Sturma Jr. , 51, of South Bend and Steven Reimondo, 48, of Cassopolis — were driving motorcycles when three deer ran across the road.

Sturma, the lead motorcyclist was unable to avoid striking and killing one deer. The collision caused the driver to be thrown from his cycle before the cycle hit a guardrail.

Sturma was not wearing a helmet, police said, and he died at the scene of massive head trauma.

Reimondo, 48, of Cassopolis, swerved to miss the deer and also was thrown from his cycle before it crashed into the guardrail.

Police said he was wearing a helmet and was taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City for treatment. A nursing supervisor there told SBT24/7News he was treated and released.
