A suspect wanted in connection with the Illinois stabbing deaths of two men was captured near Mentone, Ind., Sunday evening.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said Brian Garrett, 27, of Watseka, Ill., was taken into custody about 7:30 p.m. after a manhunt through a wooded area on the town’s outskirts.

Illinois authorities say he is charged in the deaths of the two men, ages 48 and 61, who police say were stabbed in a home where he and a 24-year-old female companion were also staying.

The pair had been asked to leave, police say, when Garrett stabbed the two with the woman, Tricia Hall, witnessing one of the attacks.

He then dragged one of the bodies from the front porch and tried to hide it in the trunk of his car, but was unable to do so and left the body beneath a tree.

He then fled for Indiana, taking Hall with him. Garrett's grandmother lives in Warsaw, the Sheriff’s Department said in its news release.

The pair were unable to locate the grandmother, so Garrett asked Hall to drop him off in a wooded area, east of Indiana 19 near County Road 500 South, so he could camp out.

She assisted Kosciusko County officials, as well as agencies including Indiana State Police, and Warsaw and Mentone departments, in locating him.

Garrett is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail awaiting extradition to Illinois.
