SOUTH BEND – Police said a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg Saturday night after a handgun went off in his pants.

Police were called to a home in the 1500 block of North O’Brien Street shortly after 8 p.m. after a shooting was reported.

Sgt. Charles Stokes said officers talked with the injured man, who at first said he’d been shot by an unknown person driving a green car. Police further questioned the man, however, because the downward wound through his Achilles tendon appeared to be self-inflicted.

Stokes said the man’s injuries were minor, but police were checking his criminal history for warrants. He was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The gun used in the shooting was not found, although the man claimed to have thrown it into a nearby trash can. Stokes said it was possible the gun was taken by someone else or hidden by the teen, who isn’t legally old enough to carry a handgun.

“Nineteen-year-olds,” he said, “shouldn’t be carrying guns.”
