Police say a 5-year-old boy was sent to the hospital over the weekend following a near drowning in Goshen.

The boy, Carter Nicolai of Columbia City, Ind., was attending a gathering of family and friends about 8 p.m. Saturday in the 58100 block of Old Towne Drive, according to Trevor Wendzonka, spokesman for the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

He was swimming with others at the party when he was found at the bottom of the pool on the property.

“The boy ventured to the deep end and another child noticed that,” Wendzonka said. “An adult came out and brought the boy to the surface.”

Police and EMS were called as bystanders began CPR. The boy was taken to the hospital in Goshen before being transferred to a facility in Fort Wayne for further care.

A spokesman for Lutheran Children's Hospital said the boy remained in serious condition in the pediatric intensive care unit Tuesday afternoon.
