EDWARDSBURG — A 24-year-old Kalamazoo man was in critical condition on Thursday after the car in which he was a passenger struck a porch of a home and crashed into a creek in Calvin Township, police said.

Zane Shilts was ejected from the car when the driver, Jeffery Shilts, 22, lost control of the vehicle on Osborn Street, struck a mailbox and porch of a residence, rolled over and landed in Crooked Creek, police said.

Another passenger, Louis Lampert, 39, of Cassopolis suffered minor injuries along with the driver.

Zane Shilts was transferred to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the incident and both the driver and front passenger were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Police said it’s unclear if Zane Shilts was wearing a seatbelt when he was thrown from the car.

Speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
