KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — A drive from Houston, Texas to Kosciusko County landed one man in a local hospital Thursday morning, after he said he was shot near Indianapolis.

Now police from four different departments are trying to figure out what happened.

Jose Montiel, 30, was driving a van on Interstate 65 near the northwest side of Indianapolis. He said around midnight he was leaving a gas station and pulling onto I-65 when he heard loud bangs and his back window shattered.

Montiel said he started to feel pain in his shoulder, and noticed he was bleeding.

"In a sense it's still random, but we feel that this particular vehicle was targeted," said Lt. Kip Shuter of the Warsaw Police Department.

Montiel called his brother-in-law, who told him to keep driving to his home in Milford since he didn't speak English and didn't know where the hospital was. His family drove him from there to Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw. He was treated and released.

Meanwhile, police found 10 bullet holes in the van.

"We don't believe there was any illegal activity," said Shuter. "We don't believe there was any drug activity. We ran a K-9 around the vehicle and the K-9 didn't hit on anything."

Police in Warsaw, Milford, and Indianapolis — as well as Indiana State Police — are all searching for clues and suspects in the shooting.

What makes this incident so bizarre is that the victim was on his way to Milford to see family. When WSBT asked the police if this could be a sniper style shooting, they said they do not know.
