Stormy weather creates dangers for Elkhart meth lab cleanup

By WSBT 24/7 News

Fearing a mix of water and meth could prompt a chemical explosion, Elkhart firefighters were called out at 12:30 a.m. Friday as a precaution during a book bag meth lab cleanup at Congress and Richmond streets.

Elkhart Police were pursuing a vehicle when the occupants jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot. A 17-year-old was located and arrested, but a second person eluded police.

During the search to find that person, police found a book bag thrown onto a vacant lot at the northeast corner of Congress and Richmond streets. The book bag had an active meth lab.

The Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Suppression Team and Elkhart Police Department Street Crime Unit also responded to the scene.

Elkhart Police are continuing their investigation.
