Local authorities now have some extra ammunition to fight the growing meth problem in our area.

On Monday morning Congressman Joe Donnelly announced hundreds of thousands of dollars are headed for the St. Joseph and Elkhart County prosecutor's offices for use in battling the methamphetamine epidemic.

In 1995 police reported just six meth labs across the state. That number jumped to more than 1,000 last year.

“These are two areas that have had some of this in our counties, and so this will hopefully give additional assistance to the prosecutors to be able to tackle this very difficult issue,” said Donnelly.

Elkhart County saw the second highest number of meth lab busts last year in the state.
