Police urge caution after teenager is pulled from water after pier jumpBy Chad Damp, WSBT-TV Reporter
ST. JOSEPH — A summer tradition almost claimed a young man's life Monday. It's prompted police to make a new warning about the dangers of pier jumping. The problem happens at the pier along Silver Beach in St. Joe. Pier jumping has been going on for generations; despite the dangers. But again, Monday afternoon, an 18-year-old man wound up at the hospital after nearly drowning. Police say the man survived, but the potentially life threatening accident did not stop others from diving in themselves. "Last year, I happened to be working the day that we had someone actually drown," said Patrolman Chris Sysko of the St. Joseph Police Department. "We had two other calls of possible drownings (that day) all in a two-hour period." Officials say there's no law against pier jumping so there's really only one thing that will keep people who do it from taking the plunge. "In front of my eyes, I'd have to see one of my friends die," said one jumper. The friends of the man who almost drown today say they don't think he'll ever jump off the pier again. That's the message police hope others take away from this as well. Last year, local officials discussed an ordinance that would make it illegal to pier jump, but the county dropped the measure when local police said they wouldn't be able to enforce it.
