SOUTH BEND — On Tuesday morning two local radio personalities were sitting — in order to take a stand.

Rob and AJ from U93 are spending the entire week on the roof of Martin's Supermarket on the corner of Ironwood Drive and State Road 23 for Roofsit 2009, an annual event to raise money and awareness about child abuse.

The station is broadcasting stories of survivors and those helping children get out of dangerous and sometimes deadly situations. Four children die every day as a result of child abuse across the nation. In Indiana, the number of cases is on the rise. In May alone, over 800 cases of child abuse were reported in St. Joseph County.

The Indiana State Department of Child Services reports that from July 2002 to January 2008 the average number of child abuse and neglect cases was about 1,000. From January 2008 to April 2009 the number of cases averaged between 14,000 and nearly 18,000 cases.

This abuse occurs at every economic level and often times is not even reported.

If you want to make a difference, you can stop by the grocery store all week long and make a donation, no matter the size. You can also call 1-800-835-KIDS and make a donation over the phone. Rob and AJ are broadcasting for 12 hours a day and collecting donations all the way up to Friday evening.
