A Michigan man is in custody after investigators say he not only assaulted his father, but also an officer.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department said police arrived at the home, on Red Arrow Highway in Hartford Township, just before noon Monday.

They say Matthew McLellan, 38, of Kalamazoo, was fighting with his 61-year-old father over the death of the younger man’s dog.

Police arrested McLellan for assaulting the father, whose name has not been released, as well as a police officer who was kicked in the leg.

A small amount of marijuana also was found in one of McLellan’s pockets, the Sheriff’s Department said in its news release.

McLellan had a blood alcohol level of 0.32 and was taken to Bronson Lakeview Hospital for treatment before he was moved to jail, they said.
