River Road home a total loss after fire

County firefighters battled a house fire in Penn Township Tuesday. Since there are no fire hydrants on River Drive, firefighters had to stretch the hose several hundred yards from Jefferson, down Buckeye and over to the burning structure. As a result, Jefferson was closed for more than an hour between Buckeye and Bittersweet Road.

Firefighters from five different departments battled a house fire on the banks of the St. Joe River Tuesday evening.

The fire started at a home on River Drive, east of Bittersweet in St. Joseph County.

They were about a thousand feet away from the fire, but still put it out in about 20 minutes.

The family dog was inside at the time, but made it out okay.

Investigators say the home is a total loss.

Right now, they're not sure how the fire started.
