Police bikes stolen from downtown South Bend

SOUTH BEND – Two $600 police bicycles were stolen Thursday after an officer left them unattended outside a downtown business, police said.

SOUTH BEND – Two $600 police bicycles were stolen Thursday after an officer left them unattended outside a downtown business, police said.

The mountain bikes were taken about 5 p.m. at the corner of South Main and Wayne streets, outside Horizon Bank.

According to South Bend police, Sgt. Suzanne Dieter was watching the bikes while her partner and husband, Cpl. Derek Dieter, drove to the police station to drop off reports.

While waiting for her husband to return, police said, Suzanne entered the bank to use the restroom and fill up the couple's water bottles, leaving the bikes unattended and unsecured.

Shortly thereafter, police said, a bank teller witnessed two young males jump on to the bikes and ride away.

The pair were reportedly last seen heading west on West Washington Street.

Several officers canvassed the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods, police said, but neither the suspects nor the bikes could be located.

Police said the bikes are valued at $600 each, and one was carrying a Tazer.
