CROWN POINT, Ind. — Authorities say that a crash on Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana has killed five members of the same family.

State police say the crash happened about 4 a.m. Friday near the Lake County city of Crown Point and involved three semi-trailers and a pickup truck.

An investigation revealed that a 1999 International semi-flat bed was traveling south on I-65 in the right lane near the Crown Point exit.

Police say traffic slowed for a car being towed from the interstate. The driver of the semi, George A. Hack, told police he felt something hit him from behind. He later realized it was a Dodge pickup.

A 2004 Sterling semi with double box trailers was in the right lane as well, according to police. The driver of that semi, Forest E. Stover, came over the hill at the Crown Point exit and saw too late that traffic had slowed. He hit the rear of the Dodge.

Stover's semi pushed the pickup into the rear of Hack’s semi. The pickup caught fire, which then spread to Stover’s semi, said police.

Jeff Wells of the Lake County coroner's office confirmed that five people from the same family died in the pickup.

They were:

  • Brian W. Workman, 33 of Hobart, Indiana. (Husband/father)

  • Joanna L. Workman, 31 of Hobart. (Wife/mother)

  • Ashley Workman, 13 of Hobart. (Daughter)

  • Tyler Workman, 8 of Hobart. (Son)

  • Ryan Workman, 1 of Hobart. (Son)

Stover and Hack escaped their semis unharmed.
