Rescue crews were sent to the St. Joseph River near South Bend's Keller Park Friday after two canoeists fell into the water.

The men, part of a group of Notre Dame students, were reportedly paddling the river in a rented canoe about 6:30 p.m. when the boat caught a branch, turned sideways and then tipped about 20 feet from shore.

Both men were wearing life jackets.

Rescue personnel responding to several calls from fellow canoeists arrived and put two boats in the water. They searched the river for about 20 minutes without success before the pair finally turned up on shore near Riverside Drive and Woodlawn Boulevard.

Both men were soaked head to toe and exhausted, but otherwise uninjured.
