Wolcottville woman drowns while playing with family dog

By WSBT 24/7 News

Kelly Smith, 41, of Wolcottville, was playing Frisbee with the family dog Saturday afternoon on a sandbar in Dallas Lake, in south-central LaGrange County.

Smith swam out to deeper water just before 5 p.m. to recover the Frisbee, but began to have trouble swimming and slipped under the water’s surface.

Harold “Bud” Rea, saw Smith struggling and dove in water between 12- and 16-feet deep to rescue her. Rea brought Smith back to shore, to a waiting ambulance, according to Indiana Conservation Officer Rodney Clear.

Smith could not be revived.

Indiana Conservation officers and the LaGrange County coroner’s office are continuing their investigation.
