Baby dies following Marshall County accident

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday following the death of a 6-month-old baby in Marshall County.

Few details about the death have been released. But authorities say Kristoffer A. Springman, whose hometown remains unknown, was in a child restraint seat inside a vehicle when an accident happened Monday afternoon.

That crash was reported at 1:47 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 31 and 7B Road, according to the Marshall County Coroner's Office.

Initial reports indicated a two-vehicle collision between a car and sport utility vehicle, according to WSBT staff. But 911 dispatch at the Marshall County Sheriff's Department said early Tuesday they are unable to confirm other details until later in the day.

Bystanders performed CPR at the scene, the coroner said, and the child was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.

But Kristoffer died shortly before 2:30 p.m.

The death remains under investigation, authorities said.
