One person died and two others were sent to a local hospital following a Van Buren County house fire late Monday.

Dispatchers for the Sheriff’s Department said the fire was reported just before midnight at a home in the 55500 block of 14th Avenue in Columbia Township.

Michigan State Police say one woman noticed smoke, and was able to get herself and two others out of the house.

Authorities were alerted when someone from the burning home ran to a neighbor’s house for help, dispatch said.

One person tried to go back into the house, say police, but was overwhelmed by smoke and lost consciousness. Firefighters arrived and moved her to safety.

When the fire was extinguished, a man was found in the residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four departments in addition to Columbia’s assisted in battling the flames. They included Gobles and Bloomingdale.

The official cause of the blaze has not been released and a fire investigator remained on the scene early Tuesday.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the injured.
