PLYMOUTH — Strapped in a child restraint seat, 6-month-old Kristoffer Springman of Plymouth, died after the car he was riding in was hit by another vehicle.

The collision occurred before 2 p.m. Monday at U.S. 31 and 7B Road.

Jeremy Orbik, 35, of Plymouth, crossed U.S. 31 from westbound 7B Road when he was hit by a vehicle traveling south on U.S. 31, according to a Marshall County Sheriff’s Department report.

Orbik’s car slid off the road into a ditch.

According to a report from John Grolich, Marshall County deputy coroner, when Plymouth EMS arrived, Kristoffer was found in cardiac arrest and CPR was performed by bystanders.

Kristoffer was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, where he was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Kristoffer was a backseat passenger riding in the child restraint seat and remained in the seat until bystanders removed him to perform CPR, according to reports.

Grolich said Tuesday that Kristoffer died from blunt force trauma to the head. Toxicology reports are pending and an investigation continues into the safety of the car restraints.

Injured in Orbik’s vehicle were the baby’s parents, 20-year-old Gabrielle Springman of Plymouth and 29-year-old Aaron Minch of Bremen.

Springman and Minch were taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, where they were both treated and released.

Also injured in the crash was the driver of the other vehicle, 69-year-old Donald Russell of Indianapolis, and his passenger, Helen Batuello, 82, of Plymouth.

Russell was treated and released. Batuello was treated, however no record of her release or condition was available Tuesday.
