St. Joseph County police are investigating an unusual string of vehicle thefts. This time, thieves aren’t targeting cars or trucks; they’re taking golf carts.

“It’s kind of all over the place,” said Sgt. Bill Redman. “There’s no explanation … I mean we’ve had golf cart thefts over the years sporadically here and there but it seems like the last couple of months it’s increased pretty drastically.”

In the last six weeks, Redman said his department has investigated 10 cart thefts. Four of those carts were stolen from the Bowlers Country Club west of South Bend.

“It’s a big deal,” said Bowlers golf course superintendent Chuck Brooks. “Replacement value for these is $7,000 each.”

Brooks said it’s another hit for an already slow year for business thanks to the unusual weather and a sluggish economy.

“If they (thieves) can find a way to do it, they’ll do it … a lot more people are taking everything they can,” said Brooks.

Redman said other carts have been stolen from Knollwood in Granger, and individual homes in the southern part of the county.
