SOUTH BEND — A woman told police she was raped Sunday by an unknown man in Leeper Park.

The South Bend woman said she was walking on the island in the park between 8 and 9 p.m. when she was approached by the man, who pushed her up against a tree and began groping her. The woman said she was afraid to call out or resist the man, who then raped her.

The man is described as black, about 40 to 45 years old, bald with some gray hairs on the side of his head, and wearing brown plastic glasses.

Police were informed of the rape Monday afternoon when the woman went to the hospital to request a rape kit.

The woman told police she didn’t report the rape right away because she was in shock from the incident.
