SOUTH BEND — A man is heading to prison for his role in the murder of a 16-year-old South Bend girl.

A judge sentenced 31-year-old Jason Reeves, also of South Bend, to 65 years behind bars.

Reeves was one of five people accused in the April 2006 killing of Ja-Vonda Tharbs. A jury convicted him of murder and conspiracy to commit murder last month.

Reeves maintained his innocence during his sentencing hearing, telling the judge he planned to appeal.

“I regret that I did not take the stand (during trial) to show that I am of sound mind,” he said. “Although I do have an extensive record ... again, I wasn’t there. I never wanted to be there.”
