Teen admits role in LaPorte school bus vandalism

LAPORTE, Ind. — A teenager has pleaded guilty to vandalizing 15 buses belonging to a northern Indiana school district, which caused officials to cancel classes for more than 2,700 students.

An agreement with LaPorte County prosecutors calls for 18-year-old Jack Keldsen of New Carlisle to serve one year of probation and 40 hours of community service on a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

He must also pay about $8,700 to the New Prairie United School Corp. for repair costs. Two others, who were 17 when the vandalism happened in February, have been sentenced in juvenile court to probation and 20 hours of community service.

The buses in the district about 10 miles west of South Bend had slashed tires, cut radiator hoses, damaged air suspension systems and spray-painted with graffiti.
