MISHAWAKA — Douglas Road between Main Street and Fir Road was closed Thursday morning after a bulldozer hit a 4- to 6-inch gas main.

A windshield was blown out of the bulldozer by the leak, according to Mishawaka Fire Department battalion chief Jim Cocquyt, but the bulldozer operator was not injured.

Douglas Road is being widened along that stretch, and the gas leak was across the street from the new Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, which is under construction.

Because the gas was going straight up in the air, no evacuations were planned, Cocquyt said.

Representatives of Northern Indiana Public Service were on the scene to shut off the gas.
