SOUTH BEND — Donations have covered the cost of surgery for the Rottweiler shot while protecting her family Wednesday morning.

Veterinarian Jeff Buchs at South Bend Animal Clinic said donations have covered Angel’s current bills, with some left if there are more complications.

He said people have mailed money and dropped it off, and more have called to see if they can help.

Buchs said Angel was released Wednesday night to her owner Stephanie Turner.

The veterinarian talked to Turner on Thursday morning and was told the dog was moving around and starting to eat some.

He said Angel had an appointment Thursday afternoon to be checked out again.

Turner said she woke about 3 a.m. Wednesday to what she thought was a firecracker.

She went to the living room to find the front door of her Prast Boulevard home open.

She went outside and found her wounded dog returning home.

Turner credited the dog with protecting the family.

If you'd like to make a donation, contact the AAA Federal Credit Union. Turner says any money not used for Angel's care will be donated to local veterinarians and the Humane Society in Angel’s name.
