A neighbor of Bender's Corner Store gave police a description of a man they saw crawling out of a broken store window early Thursday.

That description lead to the arrest minutes later of Antoine Bates, 27, of Elkhart, but not before he ditched his bicycle, ran from police and was subsequently Tasered, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff's Department report.

The store's security alarm company first alerted the sheriff's department the store, at 52019 County Road 5, had been broken into just before 3 a.m.

Along with the suspect, police recovered more than $4,600 and cartons of cigarettes taken from the business.

Bates remains in the Elkhart County Corrections Center in lieu of $10,000 bond on felony burglary and resisting arrest charges. His initial court date is set for July 13.

The sheriff's department is reporting another cigarette theft, this one at 1 a.m. Wednesday from Bawa Food Mart, 22700 Old U.S. 20. The owner reported to police a window was broken and six cartons of Newport cigarettes were missing.

No arrest has been made in that theft.
