BUCHANAN — It's a big weekend in Southwest Michigan. More than 20,000 fans are expected for the RedBud Motocross All-Pro Nationals in Buchanan. And fans aren't the only ones excited — it’s a big weekend for the community that hosts the event.

Local business owners in Buchanan say they look forward all year for these racers, their teams and their fans to set up camp and spend.

“Very quiet, very small,” said Karen Almaguer of Buchanan. “Everybody knows everybody. And we all eat at Hilltop [café] so we all eat together so we all know each other."

But every year on the Fourth of July, everybody at the Hilltop Café knows they'll have company — a lot of it.

"It's huge for this town."

It is the RedBud Motocross All-Pro Nationals. And don't just call it a dirt bike race; it is considered among the fastest-growing sports in the country.

This summer, for the first time, major national television networks are broadcasting the races — including the one here.

And business owners in Buchanan couldn't be happier.

"It's a big deal,” said George Bouzas of Hilltop Café. “We wait all year round to see the people because a lot of people come in town and it helps the business."

About 5,000 people live in the town of Buchanan. For the race this weekend, about 25,000 people are expected to travel here from all over the United States and even around the world.

"A lot of campers are out there so they go to the stores, stock up,” said one resident. “It helps the town quite a bit!"

If you're thinking the recession may be putting a damper on the sport, think again. The people who own RedBud said last year, in addition to the pro racers, they had about 400 amateur racers take part. This year, they're well over 600.
