Matthew Konkle was treated for arm, knee and leg injuries Friday after being pinned between his Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department patrol car and a vehicle that struck him from behind.

Deputy Konkle and another deputy made a routine traffic stop on Delaware Street in Decatur just before 2 a.m. Friday. A potential suspect from the stopped vehicle was sitting in the back seat of the patrol car and Konkle was outside the car by trunk when another car plowed into him.

Konkle was taken to Bronson/Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw. He was released from the hospital later Friday, according to the sheriff’s department.

The driver of the car that hit the deputy and his car, a 26-year-old Dowagiac man, was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

The person who was sitting in the patrol car when it was struck, was found not to be intoxicated and was not physically injured in the accident, according to the sheriff’s department.
